In the heart of medieval Gaeta, the Castle dominates the city like a monument to memory, guardian of a thousand years of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over time, the building has changed shape and function, until it took on its current appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From 1200 to 1990, it was a military fortress, a penal colony and finally a military prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Owned by the State, in 1995 it was granted to the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio for \u201cfree and perpetual\u201d use for higher education, research and cultural initiatives. The monument is open to the public for visits with physical, cognitive and sensory accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The monument is spread over three levels: ground floor, first floor and second floor. Over the years, it has undergone major restoration and renovation work by the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, which continues to promote the site and raise awareness of it among the community, both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Visiting the Castle means taking a journey through time to discover some of its most significant places: the Chapel of San Teodoro, the Bourbon Cells, the Dormitory A and the Piedmontese Cells. The tour is enriched by innovative communication devices, 3D models and a Digital Library, which provide an immersive and engaging experience for visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Castle’s link with the city is based on close collaboration with the local community. The University of Cassino and Southern Lazio and local stakeholders are working together on an ambitious mission: to enhance the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the monument, in a climate of dialogue and listening to the needs of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
