To understand a place, you need to know its history.
Some places present themselves to visitors in a way that does not fully represent them, which does not allow them to fully show the role they have played throughout history. Gaeta Castle is a clear example of this: over the centuries, not only its appearance but above all its function have been literally shaped, transforming it from a fortress into a place of detention. Today, it is precisely because of this severe characterisation that the castle is remembered and perceived, having maintained its role as a prison until 1990.
